Bio and Theoretical Lens
I find I am always searching for some greater meaning beneath the surface of things. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, the kind of place where culture is something that people like to talk about but is often hidden behind palm trees and concrete. There is something beautifully tragic about it, and it's made me into the artist I am now: attracted to rich warm southern light and shadow, the raw vapid deserts, the sea, and urban landscape. After moving to the Bay Area 3 1/2 years ago, I discovered the bright California light of the north, the rich greens of the forests, and rediscovered the vastness of the Pacific.
Travel is a huge part of my life and is the subject of most of my photography. I look to Henri Cartier-Bresson for composition and Edward Weston for form. My paintings are linear and rich in color. I look to Lucian Freud for his raw fleshy nudes and Matisse for the outline of the female form. My drawings are mostly female nudes, inspired by Toulouse-Lautrec and Egon Schiele.
I am inspired by my father, William Forward, who is a wonderful artist, along with my grandfather Robert Zentall and my great-uncle Lucian Aigner, the photographer. I am blessed to have had these men in my life to show how vulnerability is manifested in the creative process.
I believe in an organic, interactive, and full expression of who I am in my art. I am interested in the spaces we take up and the complex presence of light. I like to visually express these ideas both realistically and abstractly. How can shape and form shift in perspective? How can everyday images be seen as extraordinary? What do these images represent? How do they speak to me and my audience?
During the time I have spent in the last two years getting my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and my Masters in Early Childhood Education, I have been filling the well with wonderful experiences and interactions that I hope will fuel the next body of work to come.
